GSD was appointed by DBR Restoration to carry out the external redecoration of Brighton Pavilion: a complete overhaul of the sash windows, including glazing repairs, alongside the redecoration of external masonry and metalwork.
Heritage conservation work of this kind demands more than a good finish. Surfaces are prepared and decorated to conservation standards, colours are matched to the historic scheme, and every detail is agreed with the conservation team before work begins — the discipline that separates heritage decorating from general painting.

Protection and sequencing around a live visitor attraction
Masonry-grade coating systems were used across the external render and stonework, with Dulux systems specified for the sash windows and metalwork — chosen for durability in an exposed coastal setting and a finish sympathetic to the building's character.

Listed building painting is judged on the decisions you make before the first coat, not just the finish.
Works carried out within listed-building consent, with methods and materials agreed through conservation officer liaison.
Sash windows overhauled and repaired using traditional methods — restored, not replaced.
Finishes matched to the Pavilion's historic decorative scheme rather than an off-the-shelf colour card.
The Pavilion stayed open throughout. Hoarding, protection and sequencing kept visitors safe and the attraction trading.
Scaffold access designed around the building's ornate fabric and visitor routes — protecting minarets, domes and stonework while giving trades safe access to every elevation.
