Decoration of listed and historic buildings, with specialist finishes and hand-applied work.

GSD London is a specialist commercial painting and decorating subcontractor working for main contractors, quantity surveyors, property managers and private clients across London. Our heritage works cover decoration of listed and historic buildings, including specialist finishes, gilding and hand-applied work, carried out to the approvals in place. CHAS, Constructionline Gold, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
Heritage decoration is the painting and decorating of listed and historic buildings to a standard set by the fabric, the consent and the conservation officer rather than by a modern specification alone. It covers preparation and repair of historic plaster and joinery, traditional and breathable coating systems, hand application, colour matching to the original scheme, and specialist finishes such as gilding, graining, marbling and lining. The aim is a finish that belongs to the building and protects it.
Heritage decorators work from a record of the existing finishes, often with paint analysis, and agree a sample panel in the room before the wider works start. The approved sample stays on site as the standard for inspection. Protection of fixtures, artwork and floors runs from the first sample to the final handover, because most of the work is in buildings that stay in use. GSD London delivers heritage decoration for listed buildings in London as a subcontractor to main contractors and conservation specialists.
Listed building consent usually conditions the finishes, the materials and the method. The decorator has to work to the consent, not just the specification.
A historic colour scheme, a distemper or limewash, a graining or marbling. The existing finish is recorded, sometimes analysed, and sampled until the match is approved.
Cornices, mouldings and panelling that have been damaged or over-painted. Repair and preparation are done by hand so the detail is kept.
Gold leaf on mouldings, lining, stencilling or trompe l'oeil. Skilled work that is sampled on the actual surface before the full run.
Museums, churches, clubs and embassies rarely close. Protection of fixtures, artwork and floors runs from the first sample to the final handover.
Solid walls and lime plaster need coatings that let moisture out. The wrong modern paint traps it and the finish fails, taking the plaster with it.

The existing finishes are recorded and sample panels are prepared for approval before work starts.
Fixtures, fittings and floors are protected, and access is agreed for each space.
Substrates are prepared and repaired, then decorated using the approved system and technique.
Completed work is inspected with the site team and the record of finishes is issued.

We work as a subcontractor to the main contractor or for private clients. The order sits under JCT subcontract terms or individual contracts with clients. Site rules, access, welfare and the programme are set by the main contractor, and our works are planned around the sequence already agreed on site.
Yes. On heritage work a sample panel or a complete trial area is normally prepared first and approved before the wider works proceed. The approved sample is retained on site and used as the standard the finished work is inspected against.
Pricing follows the drawings, the specification and the schedule of works issued with the enquiry. Where the scope is not yet fixed we price on a provisional basis and confirm it once the survey is complete. Variations are agreed in writing before the work is carried out.
In most cases yes. The existing finish is recorded and, where necessary, a sample is analysed to establish the colour, sheen and technique. We then prepare trial panels until the match is approved. Where an exact match is not achievable we say so before work starts.
Each area is inspected with the main contractor site team before the protection comes down. Snags are recorded and closed out in the same visit where possible. Handover records, warranties and product data sheets are issued together as part of the completion pack.

GSD has undertaken numerous projects for Quinn over the past few years, including flagship projects for the V&A Museum and Warburg Institute both in the range of circa £300,000. Happy to recommend.

GSD completed the communal redecoration package valued at £100,000 at the Marriott Mayfair Grand Residencies, a 5* hotel. The project was completed in a tight 12-week program with GSD working with us to deliver it to a high standard. There were several hurdles to overcome throughout the job due to client changes, but each change was dealt with professionally by the project team from GSD. After the contract completion, the client praised the attention to detail provided by GSD and their outstanding work ethic in meeting the high expectations/time constraints of the project
