On-Site Spraying, London

Spray finishing carried out on site, with masking, containment and overspray control.

GSD London is a specialist commercial painting and decorating subcontractor working for main contractors, quantity surveyors, property managers and private clients across London. Our spraying works cover spray finishing carried out on site, with masking, containment and overspray control on live and occupied buildings. CHAS, Constructionline Gold, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.

What is on-site spraying?

On-site spraying is the application of paint and coatings by spray rather than brush and roller, carried out in the building rather than in a workshop. It suits large uninterrupted surfaces such as ceilings, soffits, exposed services and long runs of wall, and joinery, doors, frames and metalwork that have to be finished in place. Done well it is faster and gives a more even film than hand application, which is why commercial spray painting is specified on fit-out, refurbishment and new build programmes.

The work depends on containment. The area is masked, sheeted and sealed, extraction runs throughout, and the coating is left to cure before the protection comes down. Sequencing with the other trades matters as much as the spraying itself: the window falls after the substrate is complete and before the final fix. GSD London provides on-site spraying services across London for main contractors and fit-out contractors, including live and occupied buildings worked out of hours.

When on-site spraying is the right choice

Large ceilings, soffits or exposed services

Uninterrupted surfaces where brush and roller leave laps and take days. Spraying gives an even film in a fraction of the time.

Joinery that cannot leave the building

Fitted doors, frames, panelling and reception desks that need a factory-quality finish but have to be done in place.

Metalwork, balustrades and railings

Complex shapes and repeated sections where a sprayed coating covers evenly and a brush would show every stroke.

The programme is tight

A floor has to be finished and released in a shift or a weekend. With the containment up, spraying gets the area coated and curing in one visit.

A fine, consistent finish is specified

High-gloss or satin finishes on joinery and metal, where the specification calls for no brush marks and a uniform sheen.

Spray-applied products are named in the spec

Some coatings are formulated for spray only. If the specification names one, the application method is decided for you.

How we work on site

01

Survey and method

We confirm the areas to be sprayed, the finish required and the containment the site will allow.

02

Masking and containment

Adjacent surfaces are masked and the working area is sheeted and sealed before any spraying begins.

03

Spray application

Coatings are applied in the agreed number of passes, with extraction running throughout.

04

Strike out and sign-off

Protection is removed, the area is cleaned down and inspected with the site team.

Questions

Who do you work for?

We work as a subcontractor to the main contractor or for private clients. The order sits under JCT subcontract terms or individual contracts with clients. Site rules, access, welfare and the programme are set by the main contractor, and our works are planned around the sequence already agreed on site.

How do you control overspray?

The working area is masked, sheeted and sealed before spraying begins, with extraction running throughout. Adjacent finishes, services and access routes are protected. Containment is checked before each shift and removed only once the coating has cured and the area is clean.

How are the works priced?

Pricing follows the drawings, the specification and the schedule of works issued with the enquiry. Where the scope is not yet fixed we price on a provisional basis and confirm it once the survey is complete. Variations are agreed in writing before the work is carried out.

Is spraying quicker than brush and roller?

On large uninterrupted areas it is usually faster and gives a more even finish. The saving depends on how much masking the area needs. We set out the expected duration for both approaches where it affects the programme, so the sequence can be planned properly.

How is the work signed off?

Each area is inspected with the main contractor site team before the protection comes down. Snags are recorded and closed out in the same visit where possible. Handover records, warranties and product data sheets are issued together as part of the completion pack.

Andrew Williams, Divisional Director of Quinn Heritage

GSD completed the communal redecoration package valued at £100,000 at the Marriott Mayfair Grand Residencies, a 5* hotel. The project was completed in a tight 12-week program with GSD working with us to deliver it to a high standard. There were several hurdles to overcome throughout the job due to client changes, but each change was dealt with professionally by the project team from GSD. After the contract completion, the client praised the attention to detail provided by GSD and their outstanding work ethic in meeting the high expectations/time constraints of the project
