We were appointed by Buckingham Group to carry out commercial decoration at Lee Valley Ice Rink. The building is a public leisure building in east London. The job was to decorate it to a commercial standard that would stand up to public use — not a one-off show finish for a closed viewing.

We treated the decoration as a trade that had to finish cleanly against all of that, not as a last coat applied once everyone else had gone.
Working on this site meant decorating a public leisure building, not a private interior. Public buildings take a harder clean and a harder look. Edges, doors, skirtings and the change of colour between spaces are what visitors see. We decorated those surfaces as part of the commercial package, to the areas Buckingham Group released.
A leisure building around an ice rink also means moisture and temperature are part of the environment, even on interiors that are not the ice itself. We used the systems specified for the areas we were decorating. Where the specification called for a commercial coating, that is what went on.
Access on a public leisure project is shared. Decorators cannot occupy a whole floorplate because it would be convenient. We worked the interiors we were given, kept protection in place, and cleared so other trades and, in time, the public could use the building.
