We were appointed by PAYE Stonework & Restoration to carry out external window repairs and decoration on Oxford Street. The package was external work over live retail frontages: window enhancements, Repair Care timber repairs, and decoration, done above shops that stayed open.
Window repairs over live Oxford Street shops are commercial painting and decorating on a working high street — work we take across London and the South East.
Oxford Street does not stop for a decorating scaffold. The frontages stay in trade, the pavement stays busy, and the window work has to be done without shutting the street or the shops. That is the job we took on for PAYE Stonework & Restoration.
The site is Oxford Street. Our work was external window repairs and decoration, delivered for PAYE Stonework & Restoration over live retail frontages. The scope is window enhancements, Repair Care, and decorations — repair the timber, enhance the windows, decorate them, and keep the shops below trading.
External window work on a shopping street is judged on two things at once: the repair and the finish on the windows, and whether the shops below can keep trading. Repair Care is timber repair — decayed or damaged wood made good so the window can take decoration, rather than painted over and left to fail. The decoration then has to sit even on repaired and existing timber, and it has to be applied from access that does not close the frontage.
We worked as decorating and window-repair subcontractor to PAYE Stonework & Restoration. We sequenced our work around PAYE Stonework & Restoration's programme and around the live shops, protected the frontages as we went, and cleared as we finished so the pavement and the shop fronts did not become part of the site.
Live retail frontages mean every drop of paint, every offcut and every access move is in public view. We treated the street as occupied space: contained working areas, tidy access, and a finish that can take weather and a busy high street once the windows go back into ordinary use.
We worked over shops that stayed open. Access, deliveries and working areas were arranged around trading hours and a busy pavement, not around a vacant elevation we could take as one empty face. Where we carried out Repair Care and decoration, we protected the frontages and the public so repair material and paint stayed on the windows.
A live high street cannot be treated like a closed site. We kept the working area contained, worked from the access arranged for the elevation, and handed windows back in a state that could take inspection from the street. The standard is the same one we use on other external window packages in London: sound timber repair, even decoration, and no leftover damage on the frontage below.
