We were appointed by Beck Interiors to carry out the full interior decoration of the public museum spaces at V&A East in Stratford. The package was a fit-out decoration job: public rooms finished ahead of opening, to a standard that will be seen by visitors under museum lighting from the first day the doors open.

We decorated the rooms visitors will use, and we closed them out as public interiors, not as a site with work still to come.
Public museum interiors take a different kind of scrutiny from a commercial office. Lighting is even and often unforgiving. Surfaces are seen at close range by people who have come to look. Circulation is heavy once the building is open. The decoration has to be flat and defect-free, and it has to take a public cleaning regime without marking up in the first season.
Decoration on a museum fit-out sits late in the sequence. Display joinery, floor finishes and services land ahead of the painters, and the decorating package has to follow those trades without damaging them. We worked to Beck Interiors' sequence, protected finished work as it went in, and snagged as we went so making-good did not become a second visit after the public rooms were supposed to be closed out.
Finishing ahead of opening means there is no soft landing. The public spaces have to be handed over ready for the building to receive visitors, not left as a decorating site with a promise to return. We treated the handover of those rooms as the point of the job.
We worked as decorating subcontractor on Beck Interiors' fit-out at V&A East. Access, deliveries and working areas were arranged around the main contractor's programme. Where public rooms sat next to other trades, we hoarded and protected so paint and dust did not walk onto finished floors, joinery or display work.
Museum public spaces cannot be left looking like a site. We kept working areas contained, cleared as we finished, and handed rooms back in a state that could take inspection under museum lighting. The standard is the same one we use on other public and cultural interiors in London: even coverage, clean edges, and no leftover decoration damage on the work around us.
